Hardwood Floor Refinishing on Scranton's West Side
The West Side is solid, mostly pre-1940 residential Scranton: single and double homes on tight lots, built for working families during the coal years and largely unchanged in footprint since. Original hardwood is close to universal in the older streets.
What the Floors Are
Narrow-plank red oak and white oak, face-nailed or blind-nailed to a plank subfloor, laid when the house went up. In the older properties near the top of the West Side you will occasionally find heart pine in secondary rooms, which is softer and needs a lighter sanding sequence than oak.
The Repairs That Come With Age
A hundred years of use leaves specific marks, and West Side houses show most of them: a squeaking board at the head of the stairs, gaps that open every winter and close every summer, nail pops that catch socks, and a damaged plank where a radiator leaked one season before anyone noticed. Most of this is board-level repair done alongside a refinish, and it disappears completely under the new finish.
We quote repair as a separate line so you can see what it adds. Where boards need replacing we match species, width and grain orientation from salvaged stock, because new plantation oak is a different density and reads differently under finish.
Double Homes and Shared Walls
A lot of West Side stock is doubles. Sanding transmits noise and vibration through a party wall, so we agree the working hours with you before the job starts and, where a neighbour is home during the day, use dustless equipment, which is quieter as well as cleaner.
Cost on a Typical West Side Home
